Dry shampoo foam vs spray, a comparison

If you have a busy life or are kind of lazy to wash your hair sometimes there are options out there for you! If you want to wake up 15 minutes later than you usually would while others have to deal with washing their hair then you can! Modern products have given us the ability to do just that

There are a variety of options you can use if you are not into shampooing your hair every day. Dry shampoos are a great option because you can just spray or foam the product, rub it into your hair a little and voila! Your hair will feel and smell fresh and clean, but which one is the better option for you? This is a comparison that looks at them both

Spray shampoo:

What it is: A spray that is applied to the roots of your hair, it absorbs the excess oil making your hai look washed. This amazing miracle product allows you to get that clean hair look, feel and smell without having to actually wash your hair. It helps to extend the days between your washes. It speeds up your morning routine or allows you to sleep in for 15 more minutes in the mornings.

Dry shampoo comes in an aerosol can and all you do is part your hair where you want the spray to absorb, spray into your hair and rub in. The product works to absorb all the excess oils in your hair so no one knows you haven’t washed your hair in days. Note that this can’t replace a wash because your hair still needs to be cleaned. This is a great dry shampoo

Foam shampoo

What it is:  A foam cleanser that cleans your hair, no shower needed. It comes in the same aerosol can dry shampoo but when sprayed it comes out like shaving foam. These formulas can be used on the hair sans water to give you that clean fresh look and feel. It’s great at allowing you to extend the days between your washes. Note that this can’t replace a wash because your hair still needs to be cleaned.

This is different as it contains glacial oceanic mineral which works to break down the excess oils in the hair. The result is clean fresh washed looking hair in no time. To use simply spray some onto your hair and rub in. If you wish you can decide to leave your hair as it is after use or you can decide to blow-dry the hair. This is a great foam shampoo

Similarities:

  • They are both easy and quick to use. Both are simple yet effective enough to make your hair look and feel good without needing to shampoo
  • They save water which is great for the environment
  • Both allow you to stay in bed for 15 minutes longer
  • None can replace actual shampooing, you still need to get these products out as they can cause product build-up and can sometimes cause patches of hair to fall out if used long term with no washing. Read this article on how dry shampoo can cause bald spots
  • Each smell amazing, just as regular shampoo does
  • They both remove oil from your hair effectively. You won’t have that greasy oily look after using both of these products. Note that these products can cause product build up on your scalp, read this article looking at cleaning the pores of your scalp.

Differences:

  • With dry shampoo, you don’t have to wait 30 seconds for the shampoo to sink into your roots, simply rub into your hair and you’re done. Instant dry oil-free hair. You have to wait 30 seconds for the foam to sink in.
  • Foam shampoo gives you more volume than dry shampoo, yes dry shampoo offers a good amount of volume but if you really want to go all out with volume then foam shampoo is the way to go.
  • Foam shampoo has a lot of alcohol in it, which is very drying to the hair and can cause hair breakage. If you have dry hair or sensitive hair from colour treatments then normal dry shampoo is the way to go.
  • There is no white residue when using foam shampoos.  Spray dry shampoos usually give you a white residue if you make the mistake of spraying it too much or too close to the hair.
  • Unlike the foam option, the dry shampoo can feel like you’re using too much. The foam just seems to disappear into your hair leaving no residue.

Can this replace shampoo?”

No not at all, both types of dry shampoo can’t replace real shampoo, even if it gets your hair wet. You still need to clean your hair in order for the build-up of products to get out of your hair. If you don’t then your hair can become irritated and matted, in extreme cases, it can start to fall out in clumps.

These can be used if you want to alternate between washing your hair. It still gives the look, feel and smell of washing your hair. You will definitely get compliments on your hair after using both of these options. Here is a haircare routine that will help you keep your hair healthy.

Is it better to wash hair or use dry shampoo?

It’s better to wash your hair than to use dry shampoo. Dry shampoo needs to be washed out to remove the product build-up it eventually causes on your hair. If you don’t wash it out you can wind up with hair worse off than when you started with.

The talc in dry shampoo is a cause of concern because talc has been linked to cancer. If you want a safer option try a dry shampoo that uses rice or charcoal powder.  In addition, the regular aerosols products that we all use can add to pollution in the atmosphere.

Is dry shampoo just as bad as shampoo?

Dry shampoo and normal shampoo both have their own sets of pros and cons. The pro of using a regular shampoo is that it leaves your hair squeaky clean, a con is that it can strip your hair of its natural oils and it takes some time and effort to wash your hair every day.

A pro of dry shampoo is that it makes your hair look washed, free from grease and even makes your hair smell good. A con is that it can’t be used every day because it causes product of build-up. So to answer the question “is dry shampoo just as bad as shampoo” there is no definite answer. Just make sure you use both as the packaging suggests

Is it okay to straighten hair after using dry shampoo?

Some people swear by using a little dry shampoo before using heat tools such as curler or a hair straightener but considering that dry shampoo dries out your hair I don’t recommend it. It’s the job of the dry shampoo is to absorb all the excess oils from your hair, this can make your hair dry and more vulnerable to heat damage.

Does dry shampoo make hair fall out?

It depends. If you’re using dry shampoo daily for a long period of time then you should be worried. If used too often this product will build up on your hair weigh it down and make it weaker.

The oil-absorbing powder can also weaken your hair follicles. If the product is used too often too much oil will be absorbed and this can lead to dry brittle hair. This will make hair break and hair will fall out easier thus leading to hair thinning and even balding. This can be avoided by washing your hair with a clarifying shampoo after a couple of dry shampoo uses. This is a great clarifying shampoo

Is dry shampoo mousse?

No dry shampoo is not mousse. Foam shampoo comes out as mousse but it also isn’t a mousse. Hair mousse is designed to boost your hairs volume, it also offers benefits such as conditioning and hold. Dry shampoo is made to absorb the oil from your hair making it look less greasy, but it does not offer conditioning or the same hold as mousse.

What can I use instead of dry shampoo?

If you’re not so keen on using dry shampoo on your hair on a regular basis there a few things you can use in its place.

  • Baby powder: baby powder will do the same job as dry shampoo (pretty much) the powder will absorb the grease on your hair, as a bonus it smells great to! In addition it’s a much cheaper alternative to conventional dry shampoos
  • Corn starch: this everyday pantry staple can be used on your hair as well as in the kitchen. Just like the baby powder, you can use this product to absorb all the excess oils you have on your hair, simply sprinkle onto your roots, rub in and brush through your hair.
  • Dryer sheets: if you like the smell of dryer sheets and need to get rid of some excess oil on your hair then this is a great product to use in place of regular dry shampoo
  • Baking soda: this is probably another staple in your pantry and it can be used in the kitchen as well as on your hair. It will absorb any excess oils on your hair and it also helps to balance the ph levels of your scalp.

Is it OK to use dry shampoo two days in a row?

Yes it is, if the necessary you can use dry shampoo two days in a row. As long as the dry shampoo doesn’t irritate your scalp, leave it flaky or make your hair extremely dry then you can use it twice in a row. I recommend you keep an eye on the health of your hair as you use the dry shampoo. Don’t use it too often without using a shampoo in-between spray days.

How many times a week should you wash your hair?

This depends on how much sebum your scalp produces and how long it takes for it to go down the hair shaft. If you have curlier hair this process can take longer so you’ll need to wash your hair less often. If you have straight hair you can wash your hair daily or even every second day if your hair can get away with it.

Can dry shampoo be used as texturizing spray?

Texturizing sprays add texture into your hair and can even add a boost of volume to your hair. Dry shampoo has a different job to texturizing spray. Still, the right dry shampoo used in the right way can give your hair some much-needed volume and texture sans the well-known stickiness you can get from a hair spray. Simply flip your hair over and spray the dry shampoo all over. This dry shampoo gives some good texture.

What happens if I don’t wash my hair?

I know, washing your hair on a regular basis can be quite a struggle but it’s necessary. If you leave your hair unwashed the sebum on your hair will build up and create a greasy matted situation on your head. The sebum on your hair can and will collect dirt from outside and this can lead to irritation of the scalp and all-round discomfort.

This irritation can lead to scratching on the scalp which can irritate the scalp even more and cause flanking on the scalp. On top of that, your hair wont exactly smell so fresh and clean anymore. All the pollution, sweat and bacteria will accumulate and you be able to smell it.
