Meaning of pimple locations

This process is called face mapping and it helps us figure out the cause of pimples relative to its location.

Thankfully we don’t have to go all the way to a dermatologist to get face mapping done. We can do this is the comfort of our own homes.

Face mapping gives us an indication of what’s going on with the skin and why.

You may be trying to get rid of the pimples one way but the reason for your pimple can be something else entirely. Read on to figure it out.

Jawline:

If you find pimples cropping up in this area it usually means that you have a fluctuation in your hormones. This results in excess androgens being produced which then triggers an over stimulation of oil glands.

When the oil glands are overstimulated they produce excess sebum.

This leads to clogging up of pores causing pimples.

Your gut health is what triggers pimples in this area. This is what changes your hormone levels in the first place.

This can happen if your diet is mainly carbs or dairy products that contain hormones.

What to do about it:

Topical treatments can help get rid of acne in this area.

That being said, if your diet doesn’t change then you’ll be facing the same problem constantly.

I recommend changing your diet and cutting back on or removing carbs, dairy, white bread as well as processed foods. After you cut them out of your diet you should see a change in a couple of weeks.

If your skin improves, then this was the reason for your acne

Nose and forehead

This is where you usually get acne if you are stressed or are producing excess oil.

The T-zone is notorious for being a location where oil is most prominent. Stress has been found to make acne more serious.

Funny enough, high stress can cause high acne which, coincidentally, will cause more stress.

What to do about it:

It isn’t always easy to try to reduce stress but it will not only be better for your skin but also for your life.

Stress can cause a number of other health issues, acne will be the least of your worries.

To reduce stress I recommend you meditate in the morning or evenings, listen to calming music throughout the day or when you’re working or exercising.

As well as getting a good amount of sleep. Bad sleep patterns can lead to bad skin, read more here.

Cheeks:

There is a lot of bacteria and dirt on phones, this can range from faecal matter, traces of E.coli, animal faeces and a variety of bodily fluids.

This is because phones are usually not cleaned as much as they should be and they end up collecting all this filth along the way.

When you use your phone on your face you transfer all that bacteria and dirt to your face.

If you find that you have constant acne on one check-in particular then this can be the result of dirty pillowcases and constantly touching your face.

What to do about it?

The first thing you need to do is make a habit out of cleaning your phone. You can use disinfectant or pure alcohol to make it squeaky clean.

In addition, it will look shiny and good as new.

If you use a phone for work then switch the phone out for a set of Bluetooth headsets (make sure to clean those out too for earwax).

For the pillow problem, I suggest you switch your pillowcase and keep switching pillowcases religiously.

Pillowcases and all other bedding should be switched every week so do the best you can.

Hairline:

This can also be called pomade acne. The scalp produces sebum (skin oil) which needs to escape through the pores.

When hair products make their way onto your hairline the pores in that area get clogged up and form acne.

The pomade does not get absorbed into the skin but acts as a sealant and blocks the pores from opening, the sebum then gets stuck in the pores causing acne.

What to do:

A good way to get rid of this is to try to limit the number of hair products you apply onto the hair especially pomade.

If you’re still using products on your hair that can clog up your pores then I suggest you wash your face after use of the product.

Here is a list of some good face washes to keep your face clean yet moisturised.

Be sure to also wash your hair often to prevent product build-up on your hair and your hairline.

In addition, choose hair products that are not comedogenic, (products that don’t contain pore-clogging ingredients such as shea butter, coconut oil, cocoa butter and tar) this will prevent acne from creeping up especially if you have oily skin.

How can I avoid pimples?

When trying to avoid pimples you need to change not only your skincare practices but your overall behaviour as well.

If you want to avoid pimples you need to make sure your skincare products are suited for acne-prone skin.

Make sure you’re using products that are non-comedogenic (won’t cause breakouts) and you need to be using products that are labelled “for acne skin”.

These have been formulated to kill off the bacteria that cause acne as well as balance the sebum levels on your skin

You also need to keep your hands off of your face. As we go about our days our hand’s touch and collect a variety of things.

They can become a hotbed of dirt, debris, pollution and pollution and we don’t even notice. When we touch our face we transfer all that onto our skin, so make sure you wash your hands before you touch your face

You need to prevent your skin from drying out, having dry skin will cause acne.

Make sure that you keep your skin moisturised at all times even if this means using a humidifier in your room to keep the air moist.

Can drinking water reduce pimples?

Yes, drinking water can help you reduce pimples. Dry skin can cause pimples, when your skin is dry your skin produces sebum.

Sebum is the natural oil that is produced by your skin to keep itself moisturised preventing it from drying out.

If your skin overproduces sebum and the sebum mixes with dead skin cells and acne-causing bacteria on your face you can develop pimples.

When you drink water the water hydrates the face so your skin doesn’t have to produce such high amounts of sebum in an effort to moisturise itself.

The more water you drink the better your skin will be at regulating itself. In addition, drinking more water will keep your skin soft and supple.

At what age do you start getting pimples?

Generally, people start to get acne around the ages of 10 and 13 years old. This is when puberty generally starts for most people.

Puberty increases your hormone levels and those hormones cause the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum and that causes acne.

You can generally expect your acne to go away after 10 years, when you reach your 20’s.

As you get older, past the acne stage, you can develop one or two pimples occasionally or even develop adult acne.

Does toothpaste get rid of pimples?

No toothpaste does not get rid of pimples or acne. It can actually irritate your skin and irritate the pimple as well.

Toothpaste contains irritants that can dry the skin out, it may seem like a good cheap easy and affordable product to get rid of acne at first but it will do more harm than good.

It dries the skin out, it can irritate, cause redness and even cause peeling of the skin.

Some toothpaste formulas can over-dry the skin which can cause more acne and it can even burn the skin. So keep the toothpaste on your teeth, not on your skin.

Are pimples genetic?

If your parents had acne then the chances of you developing acne are quite high.

Like many of our traits having acne is something that we inherit from our parents. Genetics plays a bigger role in you developing acne than the environment and your behaviour does.

What genes you have will be the deciding factor of how your skin acts. Genetics decide whether the sebum that your face produces creates whiteheads or red angry acne.

So whatever worked for your parents to get rid of their acne will probably work for you as well.

What is the difference between acne and pimples?

The difference between acne and pimples is that pimples are one of the effects of having acne.

You can have acne whether you have pimples, whiteheads, blackheads, cysts, nodules, pustules and papules.

Acne is the condition where your pore gets clogged up.

Does ice help pimples?

Yes, ice can help pimples. Ice can help any form of blemish that is inflammatory, these include pimples, pustules, papules and cysts.

The ice will help cool and calm the redness on the affected area.

This cooling and calming helps to decrease the size of the blemish by reducing inflammation thus cutting the blemishes life and reducing the size of it as well.

It will also reduce any redness and pain that the pimples may be causing. All of this will help the acne disappear.

Ice will not aid in reducing or making whiteheads or the blackheads disappear.

These are blemishes caused by clogged pores, there’s no redness, or inflation to reduce so ice won’t make a difference when used on this type of blemish.

Note: if you decide to use ice on the acne make sure you have a barrier between your skin and the ice, like a cloth.

If not the ice can damage the skin and the tissue. If you leave it on or too long it can cause frostbite, so apply the ice in increments.
