This article looks at how to moisturize your face overnight

Your skin can become dried out and stripped of its natural moisture by a variety of things.

This can include the weather, the impurities in the air or the products you choose to put on your skin. This is why you need to have your skin moisturized at all times.

Moisturizing at night will allow the skin to really absorb all the moisture while you sleep when your skin is working the hardest.

During the night time, your skin is able to reverse free radical damage. This is also when cell turnover happens the most.

How to moisturize face overnight:

Start by washing your face

This step will allow you to get rid of external impurities such as dirt, debris and external pollutants. This skin cleanser is well-loved and widely used.

This also preps the skin to absorb any product or moisturiser that you apply after this step.

You need to make sure that you are washing your face with a moisturizing and not a drying face wash. Face washes that lather up a lot generally contain lots of sulphates which dry out the skin.

Check the ingredient list of the product you’re using to make sure that it does not contain sulphates.

In addition to choosing a sulphate free face wash, you need to use a product that is fragrance and artificial dye-free.

Be sure not to use hot water, rather use warm or cool water when washing your face. Hot water can damage the skin quite badly by drying the skin.

When washing your face be sure not to wash your face for too long and don’t wash your face more than once per session (unless you have makeup on).

If you wash your face too often you will develop signs of over-washing your face.

Apply your face mask

Masks are a great addition to your skincare routine, they deliver nutrients and moisture in your skin and don’t take long to work.

Do not use a clay mask when trying to hydrate your skin, try a sheet mas. The serums in these masks are packed with a variety of nutrients and minerals which hydrate and nourish the skin.

You also have the option of using hydrating overnight face masks. These types of face masks can be applied at night and left on the skin for the whole night.

The indigents are able to penetrate deep into the skin and hydrate while your skin is doing its rejuvenating magic. These hydrating face masks are a favourite

Now moisturize

This is the key to good hydrated and supple skin. You need to find a moisturizer that is correct for your skin type.

Regardless of your skin type, your moisturiser needs to be hydrating.

If a thin moisturiser isn’t working don’t be shy to try one that is thicker than a lotion, perhaps try a cream. Beneficial ingredients to have in your moisturisers are hyaluronic acid and aloe vera water.

This a moisturizer that work well on many skin types.

Natural moisturizers:

Natural moisturizers are great options to use if you aren’t interested in going the route of using over the counter products to moisturize your skin.

Here are some good options:

Jojoba oil: This is a great oil as it is non-comedogenic so it won’t clog up your pores while it’s moisturizing and it will still moisturize quite well.

After massaging it into your skin you can go straight to bed, no need to wash this oil off. The fatty acids and vitamin e will be great at moisturizing your skin.

Cocoa butter: This solid ingredient will melt into your skin as you keep rubbing it in. This will increase the elasticity of your skin as well as moisturize it overnight.

This is also an excellent ingredient to use on your skin as it will help with anti-ageing and will help the skin recover from sun exposure.

Mango butter: This butter is great to have on your skin because it adds moisture.

It also supplies the skin with antioxidants which will help the skin repair itself. It does not leave an oily residue and will quickly absorb into the skin.

Note: These are great moisturisers but you need a humectant on your skin before you apply these oils, a humectant will lock-in hydration

Bonus: Humidify

Your skin will benefit from being in a room where the air is clean and humid, the humidifier will supply the skin with moisture as you sleep.

Having a humidifier is particularly important if you live in a colder climate.

Humidifiers will help you maintain the skins moisture levels overnight so you can wake up with glowing supple, soft skin.

If you’re not sure if you should get a humidifier I have a more in-depth article which will explain the benefits of using a humidifier.

If you don’t want to moisturise your face throughout the night you can moisturise your face fast by only using a hydrating sheet mask.

You’ve probably seen celebrities sporting them on planes and even influencers on Instagram and these masks really do a good job of hydrating the face.

The mask is made up of either cotton or some other biodegradable material. The mask is soaked in serum and delivers the nutrients and minerals straight onto your face.

These masks can be used as often as possible because they are deeply hydrating and they can be left on for 10-25 minutes at a time.

As soon as you remove the mask your skin will feel hydrated, smooth and will look glowing. Not only do sheet masks hydrate but they can detoxify, treat acne, brighten and can even help you with ageing.

How many times a day should you moisturize your face?

You should at least be moisturising your face after you wash it whether you choose to wash your face once a day or twice a day. Every wash should be followed up with a moisturiser.

When you wash your face, you remove some of or all the sebum off of your face. If you remove too much sebum and you don’t moisturise you can develop dry skin.

You should moisturise your face after a flight. The air in the cabin is dry, this dry air can suck up moisture from your face, you need to moisturise to rectify that.

In addition, you should moisturise before you apply your makeup, this will soften and smooth your skin, applying makeup on smooth soft skin will make it look better.

Is Vaseline good for your face?

Vaseline can be good for the skin if used in the correct way.

Vaseline is an occlusive product, it acts as a sealant on the skin. For it to be beneficial you need to use a hydrator or a moisturiser before you apply the Vaseline.

When you apply Vaseline over your hydrator or moisturiser the Vaseline locks the product in and prevents it from evaporating from your face.

If you apply Vaseline directly onto your dry skin without using any moisturising product your skin will become dry.

The Vaseline won’t allow any products you use over it to penetrate your skin.

Is honey good for dry skin?

Yes, honey is good for dry skin, it is used in products as well as DIY recipes.

It is a natural humectant so it attracts water and brings it into your skin helping to hydrate your skin not only on the surface but in the deeper layers of the skin.

This deep hydration transforms your skin from being dry to being soft and supple. Honey is also great at balancing bacteria on your face, this helps to prevent acne.

As a bonus it gently exfoliates your skin, giving you glowing skin and helping to reduce dark spots. This honey is well-loved and widely used.

What to apply on face before sleeping?

Getting enough sleep is important and making sure that you get a good quality of sleep is also important, this will give your skin the best chance at rejuvenating itself.

When you sleep your skin rejuvenates itself by getting rid of dead skin cells and creating new fresh skin cells.

For your skin to be able to do this the best it can you need to take some steps before you sleep:

Double cleanse: as we go about our day the external pollutants, debris, and dirt gets attached to the sebum on our face, this needs to be washed off.

If you wear makeup you need to get that makeup off too. Double cleansing will give you a clean slate for the night

Exfoliate: you shouldn’t exfoliate every night if you’re using a physical exfoliator but you can with certain chemical exfoliators.

When you exfoliate you remove the dead skin cells off of your face and get your face ready for any products you use afterwards.

The products you use after exfoliating will work better because there are no dead skin cells which would have otherwise created a barrier to your fresh skin cells below

Rosewater: rosewater not only offers your skin a variety of nutrients but it also makes the products you use after the rosewater more potent.

It allows the products to be absorbed into the skin better, damp skin absorbs products better than dry skin

Face mask: this is a great product to use because it gives you the hydrating properties of using a serum.

As a bonus, it puts you in a relaxed mood, like giving you a spa treatment in your own home. You can use a sheet mask daily or you can use face serum daily.

Serum: Serums are lightweight products that contain concentrated amounts of an active ingredient. Because it’s so concentred it’s better at targeting your skin’s needs.

Moisturise well: you need to use a good moisturiser on your skin because you want to seal all your serum into your skin and prevent it from evaporating.

A good moisturiser will not only supply the skin with nutrients and minerals but it will also soften the skin.

How to moisturize your face overnight

What happens if you don’t moisturize your face?

Your skin will dry out: when you wash your face your run the risk of your drying out your skin because of the sulphates in your face wash or cleanser.

We use a moisturiser after washing our face in order to replenish that moisture if you don’t moisturise well you’ll give yourself dry skin

Early wrinkles: the drier your skin is the more wrinkles you’ll notice. Younger people generally have more moisturised skin, as we age the skin naturally produces less sebum and this makes the wrinkles on our face seem more prominent

Breakouts: the skin produces a natural oil called sebum, this sebum is the skins way of moisturising itself.

When the skin is dry because of a lack of moisture it produces an excess of sebum. This excess sebum mixes in with your dead skin cell and clogs pores causing pimples and blackheads.

Cakey make up: we use moisturiser and primer to soften and smooth our skin giving us a good base to apply makeup.

When your skin is dry the concealer sticks to your skin and your make up looks cakey. The makeup will also get into your fine lines.

Can you moisturise too much?

Yes, you can moisturise your skin too much.

Too much of a good thing is a bad thing. If you over moisturise your skin won’t be triggered to produce normal amounts of sebum and it will rely wholly on your moisturiser to get its moisturisation.

Your skin will then became naturally drier and the skin won’t receive the nutrients it should have from the sebum

Does night cream really work?

Night creams are formulated to be thicker and provide more nutrients than a day cream.

As we sleep the moisture on our face is naturally lost, we need something thicker and heavier to not only moisturise the skin but also seal in the moisture making sure that it doesn’t evaporate as we sleep.

In addition, night creams can release moisture into the skin over several hours giving you moisturisation throughout the night.

If you use the right cream you’ll wake up with skin that’s moisturised, hydrated, and a more even complexion in some cases.

Is there a difference between day and night cream?

Yes, there is a difference between nigh cream and day cream.

Day cream is a lightweight product. It is made this way to be more comfortable to wear in the mornings as you’re doing your day to day activates.

It isn’t as heavy as a night cream and it isn’t greasy, it leaves your skin moisturised but not oily.

In addition, some day creams can contain SPF which can help you stay protected from the sun.

Day creams have ingredients that create a barrier against the elements and a night creams main objective is moisturization, hydration and rejuvenation. This is a favourite night cream

Do you wash off night cream in the morning?

No, you don’t have to wash off your night cream in the morning.

By the time you wake up, your night cream would have completely absorbed into your skin.

You’ll wake up with softer, smoother, moisturised skin but you won’t be able to feel the night cream on your skin in the morning.

Is moisturizer good for oily skin?

Yes, moisturiser is good for oily skin, moisturiser is good for all skin types.

Oily skin produces an excess amount of oil making this skin type look oilier and shinier than the rest.

If you don’t use a moisturiser on your oily skin your skin can actually become oiler than it would have if you had used a moisturiser.

This happens if your skin becomes dry after washing, as a coping mechanism it is triggered to produce more oil. It overproduces this oil and this can lead to breakouts and a very greasy looking face.
